Below, you’ll see a list of some of the new features you can expect from the new release; pay close attention to the first one.

New DWG and Object Format:  Between the 2013 and 2016 releases, we were blessed with having backward compatibility with AutoCAD and Civil 3D files alike.  With the release of 2017, the AutoCAD formats was not changed, but the Civil format changed.  2017 DWGs could be opened with 2016, but the 2017 Civil objects were locked and could not be edited.  Well, for technical reasons, both formats changed for 2018.

Feature Lines:  Feature line elevations can now be set relative to a surface.

Offset Profiles:  Offset alignments have been available for several release, but dynamic offset profiles can now be created for them.  These profiles can be relative to the parent profile at a given cross slope and offset from that profile.  That cross slope can be edited and transitioned between slopes.

Connected Alignments:  A new alignment type can connect 2 separate alignments.  Typically a curb return.  A new dynamic profile can also be created to connect those 2 separate alignments.

Corridor Baselines:  Dynamic extracted feature lines can now be used as baselines in the same corridor they were extracted from.

Bowtie Resolution:  2017 brought limited cleanup of corridor bowties.  2018 provides an enhanced tool to specify how to clean up corridors that cross themselves, “Bowties”.

Section Views:  Move section views between section view groups.

Drafting Buffer:  Any vanilla AutoCAD entities that exist within the new Section View drafting buffer will automatically move when the parent Section View is moved.

Automated Sheet Creation:  Automated Plan and profile sheet creation has been available for some time.  Plan over plan and Profile over profile sheet creation is now possible.

Property Sets:  Add custom data to objects using property sets.  This was available for 2017 v1 Enhancements and is now integrated into 2018.

Gravity Pipes Analysis:  Resize pipes and reset inverts and compute the energy and hydraulic grade lines according to HEC-22 2009 standards.  Do so without the need to launch Storm and Sanitary Analysis software.

Pressure Networks:  Swap parts in a pressure network.

Traverse:  There is a new traverse editor and adjuster for creating points, lines, and curves.

Civil View:  Export to Civil View for 3DS Max has been enhanced.
